ABATE VAP Study

Active OBservational Study of the Adoption and Transfer of Clinical Practice Guidelines through Education, for Ventilator Associated Pneumonia

Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) remains a major cause of high morbidity and mortality in mecahnically ventilated patients worldwide and is associated with increased health care costs.  Many unanswered questions in regards to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of VAP remain.  Since the body of literature on VAP is extensive, it has become increasingly difficult for critical care practicioners to assimilate and apply evidence.

Further research is necessary to increase our understanding of knowledge translation for VAP to improve patient safety and clinical outcomes for this group of critically ill patients.  Our longitudinal, multi-phase research program will provide key information about optimal educational package and leadership/reminders system necessary to optimize Clinical Practice Guideline adherence.

The purpose of the ABATE VAP Study, a multicentre, time-series study, is to develop, implement, refine, and evaluate a sustainable behaviour change strategy in the ICU for Ventilator Associate Pneumonia.

The ABATE VAP Study is registered at Clinicaltrials.gov.  Identification number NCT00434460.
